Furniture
For the size of the room I wanted everything to be easily accessible. Having storage which is open, with long working areas for maximum use of the space allows for spaciousness, so you don’t feel claustrophobic. You need you take into consideration your physique, especially when you’re making your own desk. This comes under ergonomics, which is the process of designing or arranging workplaces, products and systems so that they are appropriate for the people who use them. To determine what height to have your desk read the next passage “When you’re seated or standing in the position you’d use the desk, rest your arms at your sides, keeping your elbow at a 90 degree angle and your upper arms in line with your torso. If the desk is the right height, your hands should rest comfortable on the desk.” (Williford, 2011)
Desk
Positioning the desk on the longest side of the wall allows for more use of the space and allows more than one person to work there at a time. Because it is facing a wall you may think this will affect how claustrophobic it is. Research suggests that if a desk was along a wall, the best thing is to put an image of a landscape on it. (Fuchigami, 2010) I chose to put a canvas photograph which my dad took on a family holiday.
- Framework of the desk
- Finished desk
Shelves
Having book shelves above the door and on the desk makes use of otherwise wasted space. It also allows for extra space for the rest of the room. (Froling, 2017) Painting the shelves helped break up the blue.
- Backboard to hold the rest of the shelves
- First level of shelves and desk shelving
Floor Coverings
Using vinyl as floor covering allowed for flexibility of what colour I wanted. It caters for wanting different types of wood colours. It is good quality, durable, warm and low allergenic as well as being easy to clean it. (Harvey, 2017) After discussion with (Froling, 2017) I chose to lay the floorboard patterned vinyl width-ways which makes the room look more spacious.
